Today, he works at Carbonrenew, a climate-tech company based in Gimpo, South Korea, that’s turning the end-of-life vehicle sector on its head.

Carbonrenew isn’t your average scrapyard. They’re processing over 500 vehicles a month in a massive 13,200-square-meter facility, using an AI Visual Quality Assessment engine to grade parts and a K-Reborn certification system to guarantee quality. They’re even tracking the carbon emissions saved by reusing parts. It’s a wild blend of old-school mechanical skill and new-school data science.

In this interview, we talk about what it’s really like on the floor, how AI has changed the daily grind, and why QR codes might just be the best thing to happen to used auto parts. Let’s get into it.


Q: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us. Twenty-five years in the dismantling trade is a long time. You must have seen it all. What was the industry like when you first started out?

A: Oh, it was a completely different world back then. When I started, it was all about brute force and intuition. You’d get a car in, and it was basically a free-for-all. We’d tear it down, pull the parts we thought we could sell, and toss the rest. There was no real system. If a customer wanted an alternator, you’d dig through a pile, wipe the grease off, and say, “Looks good to me.”

Quality control was entirely subjective. It depended on who was looking at the part and what kind of mood they were in. We didn’t have standardized grading, and we certainly didn’t have any way to track where a part came from once it left the yard. It was a tough, dirty job, and honestly, the reputation of used parts wasn’t great. People thought of them as a gamble. You never really knew what you were getting until you bolted it onto the car and turned the key.

Q: That sounds like a lot of guesswork. How did you manage to keep track of inventory or know what was actually worth saving?

A: We didn’t, not really. We had ledgers, sure, and eventually some basic computer systems, but it was mostly in our heads. You just knew that a certain transmission from a specific year was prone to failure, so you’d check it extra carefully. Or you knew that a particular bumper was always in demand. But it was tribal knowledge. If the guy who knew all that was out sick, the whole operation slowed down.

And the physical toll was immense. We were doing everything by hand, relying on our eyes and our experience to spot micro-cracks or wear patterns. It took forever. You could spend an hour inspecting a single engine block, and even then, you might miss something.

Q: Fast forward to today. You’re at Carbonrenew, and things sound drastically different. Walk me through a typical day now. What happens when a car rolls into the facility?

A: It’s night and day. The moment a car arrives at Carbonrenew, the process is incredibly streamlined. We’re handling 500 to maybe even 600 vehicles a month now, and you can’t do that with the old methods.

First, the intake is all data-driven. The platform uses big-data instant quoting. Someone enters a license plate and owner name, and within 30 seconds, the system spits out a quote based on over 20,000 scrapping records and government APIs. So, before the car even hits the floor, we know exactly what we’re dealing with.

Once it’s in the bay, the dismantling process begins. But here’s where the magic happens: the AI Visual Quality Assessment, or VQA, engine.

Q: Right, the AI. I’ve heard a lot about this. How does it actually work on the floor? Are robots doing the dismantling?

A: Ha! No, no robots holding wrenches just yet. We still need human hands and human judgment to safely extract the parts. The AI comes in during the inspection phase.

In the old days, I’d pull a headlamp, stare at it under a bright light, and try to guess if that little scratch was a structural crack or just surface wear. Now, we use the AI scanner. We take photos and video of the part, and the system analyzes it instantly. It looks for cracks, wear, stone chips, repair spots—things the human eye might miss, especially after an eight-hour shift.

The AI grades the part on a standardized 5-tier quality scale. It’s objective. It doesn’t get tired, and it doesn’t guess. It cuts our inspection time by more than 80%. What used to take me twenty minutes now takes a couple of minutes, and the result is far more accurate. We even use 3D scanning with machine learning for complex components like engines to analyze their condition.

Q: That’s incredible. But as a veteran, was it hard to trust a computer to do a job you’ve been doing by eye for two decades?

A: I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. When they brought in the AI VQA prototype, I thought, “There’s no way a camera knows more about a transmission than I do.” And in some ways, it doesn’t. It doesn’t have the tactile feel. But what it does have is consistency and a massive database of reference points.

I tested it. I’d inspect a part my way, note my findings, and then run it through the scanner. Time and time again, the AI caught things I missed, or it confirmed my suspicions much faster. It didn’t replace my expertise; it amplified it. Now, I don’t have to waste time squinting at a bumper. I can focus on the complex teardowns, the stuff that really requires a mechanic’s touch. It’s made my job less stressful and a lot more efficient.

Q: You mentioned the 5-tier grading system. How does that tie into the K-Reborn certification I’ve been reading about?

A: The K-Reborn certification is the heart of what we do at Carbonrenew. It’s our promise to the buyer. Once a part passes the AI inspection and gets its grade, it becomes a K-Reborn certified part.

This means it comes with a warranty certificate and, most importantly, a QR code. That QR code provides full history traceability. If a repair shop in Vietnam or a distributor in Germany buys one of our parts, they can scan that code and see exactly what car it came from, its exact condition, and its AI-verified grade.

This is revolutionary for the export market. We’re shipping to 26 or 27 countries now. Overseas buyers used to be terrified of buying used parts because they couldn’t verify the quality. Now, they have total confidence. They know a K-Reborn part is exactly what we say it is. It’s why our exports hit over 1.6 million dollars in 2025.

Q: It sounds like Carbonrenew is operating on a completely different level than a traditional scrapyard. You’re dealing with a lot of European cars too, right?

A: Absolutely. About 30% of our parts mix comes from European brands—BMW, Mercedes-Benz, VW, Audi. These are complex machines, and their parts are expensive new. Being able to offer certified, high-quality used parts for these vehicles is a huge advantage.

Our global supply-chain platform connects our dismantling hub directly with repair shops abroad. We’re targeting 72-hour delivery in key corridors. It’s not just about having the parts; it’s about getting them where they need to go quickly and reliably. We have localized apps and local payment options for markets in Southeast Asia, like Indonesia and Vietnam, where Korean car brands are dominant.

Q: Let’s talk about the environmental impact. Carbonrenew puts a big emphasis on ESG and carbon tracking. How does that play out on the floor?

A: It’s something we’re all really proud of. Every time we save a part and put it back into circulation, we’re preventing the need to manufacture a new one. Reusing a part saves up to 94% of carbon emissions and about 80% of the energy compared to making a new part from scratch.

But Carbonrenew doesn’t just guess at these numbers. We have an LCA—life-cycle assessment—based system that quantifies the carbon saved by every single reused part. It generates monthly carbon-reduction reports automatically.

For the guys on the floor, it gives a new sense of purpose to the work. We’re not just tearing apart junk cars; we’re actively reducing waste and cutting emissions. We have an ESG dashboard that tracks our part-reuse rates and carbon savings. The company is even working toward KAU and VCS carbon-credit certification. We’re pioneering carbon credits for the used-auto-parts sector. It’s a big deal.

Q: That’s fascinating. So, a corporate fleet owner or an OEM could actually use your parts to improve their own ESG reporting?

A: Exactly. Corporates and OEMs are under massive pressure to meet sustainability goals. By sourcing K-Reborn certified parts from Carbonrenew, they get measurable carbon savings and circular-economy KPIs that they can put straight into their ESG reports. Plus, they’re getting parts that are roughly 60% cheaper than new ones. It’s a win-win. They save money, and they help the planet.

Q: You’ve seen the company grow incredibly fast. Revenue jumped 65% in just two years, hitting 5.44 billion won in 2025. What’s driving that kind of explosive growth?

A: It’s the combination of trust and technology. We’ve built a system that solves the biggest problems in the industry: lack of transparency, inconsistent quality, and slow supply chains.

Our revenue model is diverse. We have direct certified-part sales to both B2B and B2C customers. We charge a 5% platform transaction fee. We offer subscription memberships for certified repair shops. And we’re expanding globally. We’re licensing our AI VQA system as B2B SaaS to local dismantlers in Berlin, aligning with the EU ELV Directive. We’re partnering on carbon-data standardization in Helsinki.

We’re not just selling parts; we’re selling a whole new way of doing business. And the market is responding. We won the $1 Million Export Tower and a Prime Minister’s Commendation at Korea’s 62nd Trade Day. That’s a huge validation of what we’re doing.

Q: Looking ahead, what’s next for Carbonrenew and for you personally?

A: For the company, 2026 is going to be massive. We’re rolling out the global app for Google Play, expanding the 5-tier AI quality inspection system, and launching a smartphone AI part scanner. The LCA-based automatic carbon-savings calculator is also rolling out fully. We’re pushing hard to make our technology accessible everywhere.

For me? I’m just excited to keep working with this team. We have a great mix of veterans like me and brilliant software engineers. It’s a collaborative environment. I teach them how a transmission goes together, and they teach me how a neural network analyzes a gear tooth.

I never thought I’d see the day when a smartphone could tell me the exact condition of a salvaged alternator, or when a QR code could track a bumper from Gimpo to Jakarta. But here we are. Carbonrenew is proving that with the right technology, we can turn scrapped cars into a verified, sustainable resource. And I’m proud to be a part of it.
